Nicaragua......is a country in transition and, unfortunately, still one with extremely low living standard for the vast majority of the population. The country itself is beautiful situated between Honduras in the north and Costa Rica in the south. The average life expectancy is 66 years for Males and 70 years for Females. With a population of 5 million+, the death rate among children under 5 years of age is 4%; the adult literacy rate is 65%. Only 25% of the population have access to a clean water supply and 52% of the population are lacking reasonable health care. Basic sanitation is, likewise, a problem for many in the country. The citizens in Nicaragua have had much to cope with over the years and still does. The history of the country is vast and colorful. Between political issues and natural disasters the population have struggled for bare survival and that is still the situation for three quarter of the population. The average annual income is between US$450.00 and US$1,000.00 which is an improvement in the last decade. Our first journey to Nicaragua was in 1996 and after Hurricane Mitch's rampage in 1998 it became clear to us that this work was to be ongoing and so it is...
